Sumathy Permal is a Senior Fellow and Head of Maritime Security and Diplomacy, the Maritime Institute of Malaysia. Her research areas are geopolitics and geostrategy in the Asia Pacific and maritime security issues in the Indo-Pacific. She is on the editorial board of the Australian Journal of Maritime & Ocean Affairs Australia and Associate Member of the Corbett Centre for Maritime Policy Studies.
